They're Doing to America What They Performed with Christianity

The Trump movement's most revealing and defining moments – not its most crucial, nor most brutal, nor most hazardous, nor most senseless, but possibly its most revealing – occurred earlier this fall. Over the span of multiple weeks, the American president commenced revealing the public his plans for a gilded ballroom double the dimensions of the White House and then began independently demolishing the East Wing portion to build it.

He has performed deeds countless times more severe – the present calculation of fatalities from his cuts to USAID stands at 600,000 and growing, and recently research predicted his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have attempted – truly, no former commander would have imagined – independently wrecking large sections of the executive mansion to construct a royal-themed celebration hall, with the active collaboration of numerous the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which have business with public institutions.

We transitioned from 'the meek shall inherit the Earth' toward 'the humble will perish from cholera'

As confusing as it is to watch the chief executive try to upend the old idea regarding democracy and substitute it with its complete opposite, there remains a substantial portion within America who wouldn't consider it completely novel. That encompasses people such as ourselves – within elder demographics a near majority – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have observed across decades as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we were raised with into the complete reverse of our perception of his character. Essentially, they transformed an image of affection into a symbol of animosity who blesses precisely the cruelties that he denounced in the Gospel; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, over decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting through similar means, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.

A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself

So let me first describe the Christ from my childhood, because theoretically Jesus is the center of Christian religion, and since the quickly increasing segment among Americans might have little sense about him because they identify as atheists or doubters or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that there are pearls of great price in biblical accounts.

It is unquestionably absolutely not the account of an authoritative monarch emerging; conversely, a baby is born to homeless parents in an automotive shelter, who need to rapidly escape to a foreign land to evade secret police. The baby grows up in simple surroundings, a working carpenter; his doctrine is about love for others, specifically for the poor – not merely emotional affection, but a concrete one, shown by providing food and protecting. Jesus' answer to aggression is to present the additional cheek – not as a demonstration of passive acceptance, but as a method to teach the assailant; his method regarding offenses states that when an individual takes your coat you should give the person your additional clothing as well.

The obvious and straightforward truth that the Jesus in biblical accounts calls for a type of profound affection concentrated on the impoverished has consistently rendered Christian religion rather a provocative belief system: appealing to the general public, but because of its inherent radicalness needing to be controlled. In the 1950s it was controlled through watering down – Protestantism was so widespread that it essentially baptized the status quo.

A Conflict for the Best Within Us

Hence I have become encouraged to see the steadfast resistance to Trump emerge in this past year. It has provided significant comfort to help build the movement that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and likely has encouraged voters to show up in significant amounts during minor elections. We must have to maintain it, and through comparable resolve, with American flags throughout each rally and requests to the best parts within national heritage.

We will be questioned ... how did you receive the immigrant? Did you receive him and welcome him or reject?

The country is optimally secured, in other words, by relationship to the finest in US heritage, just as Christianity is most protected by relationship to elements that cause it to be special and wonderful, which is the example of Jesus. In both situations does it suggest acting as if the most negative regarding America and Christianity did not happen; it means both humility and belief, a blend that committed national faithful ought to accept.
