Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system triggered widespread sudden floods, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews recorded rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team saved fourteen people who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. “A father frantically contacted us, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials confirmed two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and a second individual who died when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended recently over risks to emergency personnel.

Global warming is making tropical storms stronger and common. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers report that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that intense storms result in an average of millions in dollars in damage to the country annually.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration last week due to the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
