A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” declared the country's president.
The official reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term ended the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The building of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in public projects. They were built at an accelerated rate, surpassing predictions to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party urged an urgent suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was suggested pending a full technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been operating in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
