British Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French warplanes in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of approach shafts leading to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were thousands of British personnel stationed over the festive period. This action, to take out militants who endanger our way of life, shows how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military conducted what it described as a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an ambush killed two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
